African Dance Workshop
for deaf and hard of hearing individuals

by Stella Spyrou

AIM

The aim of the activity is to research how deaf and hard hearing individuals respond to vibrating pulses created from African drums and how this can become the base to the elaboration of a common dance vocabulary and teaching method destined to this group of society. Additionally, the purpose is to develop a common vocabulary between drummers, dance instructor and students that could lead to a consolidation of a teaching dance method using pulses generated from two African drums (djembe). In consequence, the basic steps of African dance will be introduced in order to familiarize the participants with this dance.

BENEFITS

The advantages of carrying out this workshops are very significant. Exploring and discovering the proper teaching process in order to elaborate a dance method adapted to the needs of deaf and hard hearing individuals, can lead to new discovery regarding to the force of primitive dances and music. Also, as an instructor this could enrich my dance approach focusing on “guiding” the students into the expressive world of African music and dance.

As for the participants, we hope that the opening to a new world could bring new reflections about their life and perhaps encourage them to redefine their identity through the arts and within the artistic community.
