Stella Spyrou is a choreographer and teacher of African diaspora dances based in Athens.
Her artistic practice centers on rhythm, pulse, and the collective experience of movement. Her research approaches the body as a carrier of memory and cultural processes, drawing inspiration from her experiences in Brazil and from Afro-Brazilian dance and ritual practices.
Work
Her first work, óMNIRA, has been presented at international festivals including Arc for Dance, 21Masdanza (Special Mention of the Jury Award), Cádiz en Danza, Trayectos, Agitart, Lekuz Leku, and Danza Urbana Festival. She has also served as choreographic curator for Cloud in Trousers by Vladimir Mayakovsky, presented within the Bob Theater Festival. Her work Diásporas was presented at ARC for Dance Festival 2025. The work was presented within the framework of the Ticino in Danza Festival as a participatory device. It took place at Parco di Villa Argentina and at SPAMM-OSC Casvegno, in collaboration with SPAMM-OSC, the sociocultural platform connected to the regional psychiatric services.
She has also taken part in an artist residency at Fienile Fluò in Bologna.
Her practice extends into education and interdisciplinary collaboration. She has coordinated an African dance workshop for mixed-ability groups at the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, led choreographic composition seminars for mixed groups at Arc for Dance Festival with the support of Liminal Access, and created a videodance for the Matariki Dance Workshop, presented through the Touch Compass platform in New Zealand.
Her upcoming production, Ânsia, has received funding from the Greek Ministry of Culture for the 2025–2026 period.
She also collaborates with the Onassis Public Schools, developing dance activities for lower and upper secondary school students.
Spyrou holds an MSc in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Patras and a BA of Arts in Contemporary Dance Practice from the American College of Greece. She further expanded her studies through postgraduate research in Biomaterials and Biomechanics at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Campinas (Unicamp), Brazil, while also attending courses in the Department of Dance and Performing Arts.
